Some of the world’s best known comics from this year’s Edinburgh Fringe will come together today, to take part in the first ever ‘Celebrity Poker Comedian of the Year’ tournament.
The event, which is bring held at Stanley's Circus Casino, at Fountain Park, will see up to 30 comedians put on their best poker faces and sit down in Edinburgh's newest card room to play a game of Texas Hold'em. The match, which is an afternoon event, will be played out until one player secures all the chips and is therefore declared the winner, and is presented with the trophy.
The poker tournament is being held to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Half the entry fee will be donated to the charity and Stanley Casinos have agreed to match what is raised, pound for pound to help this good cause.
The event, which is hoping to become an annual tournament, is being organised by Andy Smart, who previously ran the unofficial book on the popular Perrier Awards.
Andy commented on the tournament by saying:
"Poker is growing in popularity and we have a number of very
talented players taking part. Bringing so many comedians together
round a poker table is sure to be a fantastic event as well as
raising money for a very good cause."
Speaking at the event Pauline Macnamara, General Manager of
Circus Casino, added:
"We are delighted to be able to take part in the Edinburgh Fringe
in a small way by hosting this event. We hope to not only raise the
profile of poker, but will also produce a significant sum of money
for the MS Society."
