Plymouth casino deals a winning hand for hospice

A Plymouth casino played a winner for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth when it raised almost £1,300 for the cause in a charity poker tournament.

Thirty-three players took part in the event at Genting Casino in Union Street, with the proceeds boosted by a prize draw. Connor Fraser won the tournament and landed the £550 prize. All registration fees and 20 per cent of the prize pot went to St Luke’s with donations also welcomed.

The event was part of the hospice’s Accumulator Challenge where teams from local companies have been battling it out to raise the most money for the hard-working charity.

General Manager Kevin Gale said: “This was our first charity tournament and it was such a success we would like to make it an annual event.

“St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth is a great cause supported by one of our players, Dave Ottley, so when he asked if we could get involved we were happy to help. Rob Hitchcock, our poker room manager, helped to set it up and we raised £1,290.

“It was a pleasure to support such a giving charity. The evening generated a wonderful atmosphere and we would like to thank every person who joined the competition for their generosity and charitable spirit.”

St Luke’s Corporate Fundraiser Nicola Keen said: “We had so much fun with the folks at Genting – they were all amazing and fully supported the event in good cheer. The money they raised will more than cover the care at home of one of our families currently in desperate need of specialist support. We’re very grateful.”

The St Luke’s nursing and medical teams of nurses, doctors, social workers, occupational and physiotherapists work with people at home, in hospital or at their intensive support unit to manage the physical and emotional aspects of a life-limiting illness. Thanks to community fundraising they were there for over 3,400 people in Plymouth, south-east Cornwall and west Devon last year.

Poker is growing in popularity at Genting Casino Plymouth which is becoming one of the top poker night venues in the region.
