Stoke casino deals a winning hand for hospice
A Stoke casino raised £1900 for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice at a charity poker game with the sum boosted by a skilful colleague.
Katy Howell, card room supervisor at the Genting Club in Etruria Road, Hanley, joined the poker game and won £1,000 for the cause.
She was one of ten players who took part, each playing with £250 in a charity cash poker game. The casino also donated all of the proceeds from the game to the hospice.
Manager Joanne Maddick said: “Katy is one of the very few female card room supervisors in the country and has worked here for ten years. She certainly impressed everyone with her poker playing skills. We’d like to thank the customers who supported us and helped us raise such a big sum for a great local cause.”
Douglas Macmillan Hospice is the only specialist palliative care provider in Stoke, North Staffordshire and surrounding areas for adults facing any life-limiting illness. A registered charity, it needs to raise in excess of £12 million each year to maintain the services with 75 per cent of the money raised coming from voluntary donations.
The Genting Club will show its charity spirit again next month when it hosts a ‘wear it pink’ day on Friday 23 October in aid of breast cancer research.
