International Men's Day
At Genting, we believe in creating an inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive. International Men’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of men across our business, and shine a light on the importance of mental health, wellbeing and support. This year, we’re sharing stories from our team to show how Genting champions these values every day.
Richard, Gaming Manager, Palm Beach Casino
With 15 years at Genting, Richard has built an inspiring career that began when Genting acquired the Fox Poker Club. Starting at the cash desk, he soon transitioned back to gaming and steadily worked his way up from dealer to inspector and now Gaming Manager.
What advice would you give to your younger self starting out in the industry?“Keep your standards high in every situation – treat even the smallest games with the same respect as you would the biggest ones. And don’t turn up late!”
How does Genting support you and your mental health?“The way that mental health has been handled has changed a lot since I joined the casino industry more than 20 years ago. More resources are available for managers to learn how to help staff when their mental health is below par, and more emphasis has been placed on trying to work with staff to help with their problems rather than dismissing them. This doesn’t just apply to staff but also to management – all of my bosses have cared not just for my level of performance but also for my mental health, too.”
How do you think we can address the mental health challenges faced by men?“A large part of that is breaking down the taboo of talking about it – there are lots of campaigns around now that encourage men to talk about their problems rather than just remaining stoic and bottling things up.”
Why is Genting a good place for men to work?“Genting is a good place for everyone to work! However, specifically for men, I’d say that Genting have been very good at encouraging staff and management to take care of their mental health as well as their general work performance, and physical health too! Lots of helpful options available in the opt-in benefits, like the health checkup and the health cash plan”
Adam, Casino Manager, Resorts World Birmingham
With two decades at Genting, Adam’s journey is a testament to growth, opportunity and resilience. Starting as a Trainee Croupier back when Genting was Stanley Casinos, he has since worked his way through roles including Inspector, Pit Boss, Gaming Trainer, and now Casino Manager.
What advice would you give to your younger self starting out in this industry?“Enjoy it, take it all in, just be yourself and take on board all the advice offered to you. Many opportunities can come your way, take them.”
How does Genting support you and your mental health?Genting has been great to me as I have had struggles with health, which has affected my mental health. I have been given helplines and have been supported very well by my line managers.
Why is Genting a good place for men to work?“Genting is a good place because of the help and advice available. It’s a safe environment.”
Lachezar, Croupier, Palm Beach
Lachezar joined Genting Casinos 11 months ago, driven by his ambition to work in a Mayfair club and deal bigger games. In that short time, he’s already seen personal growth, as when reflecting on his journey, Lachezar says, “I believe that for the time spent here I became more confident with the games and a bit more responsible.”
What advice would you give to your younger self starting out in this industry?“Don’t take anything from customers personally.”
What are some ways you can mentor or support male colleagues?“Having a real, honest conversation with a colleague or manager with who you are comfortable with can make a big difference.” He also challenges stereotypes around gender and emotion: “We all feel the same, it’s just that men are better at hiding that they are uncomfortable.”
Why is Genting a good place for men to work?“I believe we have a friendly and supportive team”. This sense of community is what makes Genting a great place for everyone to thrive.
Luke, General Manager, Genting Casino Reading
Having joined Genting six months ago as part of the acquisition of Aspers Stratford, Luke found himself at the heart of a major transition. “My journey so far has been interesting to say the least. Transitioning a sizeable business, which was operated under Aspers for several years, to a completely new structure and ways of working presented a number of challenges. However, although challenging at times, I was fully supported and have now been presented a new opportunity by joining the Reading team.”
What advice would you give to your younger self starting out in this industry?“Take every opportunity with an open mind and always be willing to evolve and open to change.”
How does Genting support you and your mental health?“Genting is very clear on their approach to mental health and provides tools and supportive information for those who are in need of additional support.”
How do you think we can address the mental health challenges faced by men?“Embrace the changing times and continue to support openness to those who find it difficult to talk openly.”
What are some ways you can mentor or support male colleagues?“To be open and readily available to listen.”
Why is Genting a good place for men to work?“For both males and females, Genting provides equal opportunities to develop and progress.”
As we mark International Men’s Day, these journeys remind us that growth, connection and support are at the heart of Genting’s culture, creating a workplace where everyone can succeed. These journeys reflect not only personal achievements but also the values that make Genting a workplace where people can thrive.
